Guardian Rumour Mill

Alan Smith

These are lean times for Manchester United. Their trophy cabinet will be left gathering dust for consecutive seasons but fear not, the Rumour Mill has the solution to all their problems. And that solution will not cost £59.7m only to get sent off in their most important game of the season so far by pulling on the referee’s shirt having been booked for diving seconds earlier.

That solution is West Bromwich Albion’s Saido Berahino. On Monday night he was at Old Trafford to watch Louis van Gaal’s team slump to Arsenal and who could blame him if he thought: “I could do a job here.” The 21-year-old has, after all, scored 12 Premier League goals this season, three times as many as Falcao has managed. Ilkay Gundogan could also be on his way to Old Trafford and the Mill is excited to see him follow in the footsteps of Shinji Kagawa by securing a move back to Borussia Dortmund for a lesser fee a year later.

Fresh from their first victory at United in a very long time indeed, Arsenal look like landing the Palermo striker Paulo Dybala on a £29.5m deal. He has been billed as the new Sergio Agüero after an impressive spell in Serie A, which surely has nothing to do with him being Argentinian.

Manchester City’s James Milner is interested in a trip abroad if it means more first-team football, with Roma, Milan and Internazionale among his suitors, and Glen Johnson could follow in his footsteps after turning down a reduced offer from Liverpool. Who will Brendan Rodgers replace him with? Dani Alves, of course. The Brazilian is out of contract at Barcelona at the end of the season and has long dreamt of swapping Barceloneta for the Mersey.

Aware that John Terry and Gary Cahill are entering the end of their careers, Chelsea’s José Mourinho plans on strengthening their defence in the summer and the Madrid press reckon Raphaël Varane is his No1 target. Real will be looking for almost £40m, though. First of all, though, Mourinho wants to take Morgan Schneiderlin from St Mary’s, now Tottenham want to lure the impressive Toby Alderweireld from Southampton to north London. The Belgium defender is on loan from Atlético Madrid and has been a key part of the Premier League’s best defence. But he was initially spotted by Paul Mitchell, the former head of recruitment who joined Spurs after Mauricio Pochettino’s departure, and may flex their bigger financial muscles to Atlético.

Schneiderlin now looks more like to join Arsenal but in some rare positive transfer news for Southampton supporters, they are among the favourites to land Javier Hernández, who has spent the season watching Real Madrid from the Bernabéu bench, which is surely better than observing from the Old Trafford bench at the moment.

And, finally, returning to United, Arsenal’s Danny Welbeck has caught the eye of Louis … oh, you can see where this is going.

West Ham want Man City transfer target Aaron Cresswell to sign a new contract already

By Adrian Kajumba

Left-back bought from Ipswich last summer still has 4 years to run on his current deal but Hammers plan to reward him for an impressive debut campaign

West Ham want to hand Aaron Cresswell a new contract to keep him out of the clutches of Manchester City.

Left-back Cresswell is the next star in line for a new deal as the Hammers continue their attempts to secure the long-term futures of their main men.

Champions City are hoping to ship out Gael Clichy and eyeing Cresswell as his replacement, but West Ham are desperate to hold on to the 25 year-old.

At the end of the season, Cresswell will still have four years left on the contract he signed when joining the Londoners from Ipswich for around £4m last July.

However, the Hammers want to reward him for an impressive first season with an improved five-year deal that will run until 2020.

Cresswell has started 32 of West Ham’s 33 games this season, and been an ever-present in the league.

Though manager Sam Allardyce’s own future won’t be resolved until the summer, the club’s planning for next season and beyond is well underway.

Centre-backs James Tomkins and Winston Reid and midfielder Mark Noble have all signed long-term deals recently.

And the East Londoners are hoping to bring in a new right-back, another centre-back, a central midfielder and a striker in the summer.

Co-owner David Gold has hinted that Carl Jenkinson’s loan from Arsenal will be made permanent, solving their search for a right-back.

West Ham will have to cough up £10million to land Arsenal loanee Carl Jenkinson on permanent basis

West Ham are keen on signing Arsenal defender Carl Jenkinson
The Hammers will have to pay £10million to land the on-loan defender
Jenkinson has made 24 appearances for Sam Allardyce's side this season

By Simon Jones for the Daily Mail

West Ham will have to pay Arsenal £10million to make full-back Carl Jenkinson's move permanent.

The 23-year-old has impressed for the Hammers during his loan spell, with manager Sam Allardyce a big fan of the defender.

West Ham co-owner David Gold hinted on Sunday that the club would push to make the deal permanent in the summer.

However, Jenkinson, who has made 24 appearances this season, is valued at £10m plus by Arsenal.

Under the terms of his loan, Jenkinson is unable to face Arsenal in the Premier League on Saturday and Gold told a fan on social media: 'He will not play against Arsenal. This year.'

Report: West Ham United scouted Leeds United star Alex Mowatt yesterday

Mathew Nash

The talented young midfielder has been linked with a move to The Hammers.

Leeds United won against Wigan Athletic yesterday thanks yet again to a match winning performance from the ever impressive Alex Mowatt.

The 20-year-old scored his eight goal of the season as he, along with the likes of Sam Byram, Lewis Cook and Charlie Taylor continue to impress in the Leeds first-team.

It follows on from his excellent free-kick against Ipswich Town in the week and his form has now reportedly attracted the interest of a Premier League outfit.

The Sun on Sunday reported today, as described by the West Ham Vital Football thread, that The Hammers had a scout watching Mowatt at the DW Stadium yesterday.

They would have of course been impressed. He scored a goal and impressed once again for The Yorkshire club, as this reported West Ham scout was reportedly present.

Of course Leeds United will not want to sell the talented midfielder.

They currently have plenty of top young players in the first-team and the club have a hope of pushing toward promotion next season - to do so, they will need to keep hold of their big names.

Leeds will not want to see him go, so West Ham will certainly have to pay handsomely for his services if they truly are after him.

I'm not thanking you for yesterday's news, Al.

Jenkinson for ten mill? That's a 'no brainer' for me, but then it's not my money.
